Shopify fees explained for sellers

Shopify fee planning should separate payment processing, third-party transaction fees, monthly plan cost, app costs, and order-level seller costs.

Shopify fee categories

Shopify fee math usually has two layers: order-level payment/platform fees and monthly fixed costs. A single order can look profitable before you allocate plan fees, apps, subscriptions, returns, and ads.

Shopify Payments fees

Shopify Payments card rates depend on plan, country, and card type. Seller Math Hub models standard card, premium card, and international-card scenarios as editable assumptions. The calculator does not guarantee your exact Shopify Payments rate.

Third-party transaction fees

If you use a third-party payment processor instead of Shopify Payments, Shopify can charge a plan-based third-party transaction fee in addition to the external processor's own fee. The Shopify calculator has a third-party processor scenario so those costs are not accidentally ignored.

Monthly plan and app cost allocation

Plan fees and app costs are not charged per order, but they still affect store profitability. A simple planning method is to divide monthly plan and app costs by expected monthly orders. This helps sellers see whether a product is supporting its share of operating costs.

Seller costs beyond Shopify fees

  • Product or landed cost.
  • Packaging and inserts.
  • Seller-paid shipping or shipping subsidies.
  • Returns, refunds, or replacement allowance.
  • Ad cost, influencer cost, affiliate commission, or other acquisition cost.
